ONE IN FIVE “It is estimated that one in five college-aged women in BC suffer from bulimia,”’ says Dr, Fry, ‘‘and hundreds of females, from $2 to 30, are also suffering from anorex- ia nervosa, both serious health- threatening eating disorders.”’ ‘ The nutrition committee would also like to see a public awareness campaign on the potential dangers of some weight loss centres’ diet programs. “The BCMA and the BC Dieti- cians and Nutritionists’ Associa- ‘tion have developed a ten-point safe weight loss checklist,”’ says Dr. Fry, ‘‘and we would urge doc- tors to assess any centre’s diet us- ing these criteria, That also means we would like patients considering going to a weight loss centre to check with their doctors first."’ INTERNATIONAL SPEAKERS There will be numerous other recommendations brought to the congress, which will feature an in- ternational line-up of outstanding plenary speakers, an impressive roster of clinical experts, as well as the BCMA’s regular annual meeting with induction of the new association president and other of- ficers. This congress is the largest ever hosted outside British Columbia. In addition, 500 physicians’ spouses and 500 children will be attending special programs throughout the conference.
