Forestry graduate students from the University of British Columbia (UBC) are setting out to change this image, Recently three graduate students spoke at West Vancouver Second- ary School — the first school on their tour. Don Beckman, Ph.D. candidate in Forest Marketing: Dave Coop- ersmith, M.Sc. candidate in Forest Ecology; and John Donahue, M.A.Sc. in Remote Sensing (satel- lite image analysis) talked about the changes and opportunities for young people in the forest in- dustry. Forestry is B.C.’s number one industry. The Faculty of Forestry Bachelor degree program is four years in length and is one of the broadest and most intense pro- grams at UBC. It has four options that younger students can choose from for specialization. Forest Resource Management is the broadest of the options and in- cludes all aspects of multiple resource use programs —— eg. ecology, economics and business management, fire management, genetics, remote sensing (satellite imagery), pest management, forest soils, fisheries and wildlife ecology. Forest’ Harvesting harvest planning; design of forest roads; bridges and logging opera- tions;sengineering; economics; micro and macro computer ap- includes” plications in field forestry, sawmilling and pulpmilling. Forest Science includes all fac- tors that affect forests: genetics, soils, weather and climate, ecology insects, diseases and silviculture (the science of growing trees). Wood Science and Industry in- cludes the chemistry and physics of pulp production and lumber pro- duction, the use of different wood fibres, development of more effi- cient sawmills, and pulpmills. The forest industry is now highly technical. To remain competitive, grow and prosper, B.C.’s forest com- panies need young people for the future.
