LIS SEASON © : * ¥ ee . to tay SANTA CLAUS isn’t the only one with a toy shop; the North Vancouver Christmas. Bureau has one that is unique in the Lower Mainland. By NEWS STAFF The Toyshop is the second part of the Bureau’s two- pronged attack on the pro- blems of the needy at Christmas. While part of the energies of Bureau staff and volunteers goes into the pro- cess of collecting food and money for food hampers and grocery certificates and then co-ordinating their distribu- tion, others are at work put- ting toys under the trees. And the Toyshop, run out of space donated by the landiords of a North Van- couver apartment, is unique because it alone offers parents a choice of what their children will receive on the morning of December 25. It works like this: Parents applying for help from the Christmas Bureau are asked if they would like to take ad- vantage of the Toyshop ser- vice. If they say yes, an ap- pointment is made for them to visit and to select presents for their children. The Bureau asks the community to donate good, used toys, games, sports equipment and children’s books. North Vancouver firé departments, the North Shore Credit Union and Canada Trust provide collec- tion depots, and fire fighters in the area have a long history of helping by doing initial sorting and minor repairs to toys if they have a time. The toys are then taken to the Toyshop. As well as the used toys — donated by the community, the Bureau’s Toyshop efforts are aided by such local businesses as Hoyle In- dustries which, over the past two Christmas seasons, has taken the $1,200 it would normally spend for a staff Christmas party and turned it into new toys for donations. *‘*Highlands United Church has been the back- bone of the Toyshop project of life_.delicious, crea- fe _ a ' 3 : . “ . : - ~ a rts ‘oe “ aoe " wi wt 4 ye 2 . ‘ . for all these years,’’ says Gerry Miller, president of the Christmas Bureau. “They have people who work on it all year round.”’ One of those, says Miller, is a woman who prefers to re- main anonymous. A former volunteer whose activities have been cut down by ar- thritis, the woman knits 300 pairs of mittens a year for distribution. As well as knit- service ting a pair of mittens a day, the woman sorts puzzles and games throughout the year. Donations of money, specifically for the Toyshop or for the Bureau’s food donation program, will also be gratefully received at: North Vancouver Christmas Bureau, Box 86081, North Vancouver, V7L 4J5.
