2 oe Ee SRY SC PP ENE PRINT TE AF CEE TAIN SEEN TO MORTEM TN Na DE GAL i AT7-Wednesday, June 18, 1980 - North Shore News ‘nailbox Dear Editor: Most certainly, a great many citizens must agree with Doctors Purves and Warner that the election of Lions Gate Hospital Baord members via open elections: would solve a _ passing problem. Adoption of such a policy would effectively eliminate the present situation that allows an active minority group to put pressure on those running the hospital that is com- pletely out of keeping with public opinion. The reason for this situation is, of course, the sad fact that the majority of North Shore residents are relatively inactive. They tend to be complacent about a matter of which, as good citizens, they should be much concerned. And, since an open election will not decide the issue, at least for this year, those opposed to the Pro-life view can only voice their opposition by joining the Hospital Society in time to qualify for voting at the upcoming Annual Meeting. In the health section of a recent MacLean’s Magazine, Jennifer Lowen is quoted as follows: “Those people who are pro-choice are not getting out there, writing letters to editors. They are not harassing politicians and are not necessarily vocal about their views, which the anti-choice people certainly are.” To which, in the same article, Vancouver lawyer Ruth Busch adds, “The problem you face with, the issue is that people don't remember that it is an issuc. You have to keep reminding them.” Whether or not they have been harassed, there seem to be politicians -who are devoting much time and effort to the support of the Pro-life view, regardless of the fact that many who voted them into office should so abuse the power of his or her office. Pro-lifers do have the night LGH issue is ‘right of choice’ not to beheve in abortion, but they do not have the night to try to prevent others from having one safely. In a democracy, any person should not be denied having any medical procedure deemed necessary by their doctor, and within the law, carried out in a hospital. Otherwise, those in need of abortions will be driven away to other communities or, worse, back to quacks. “The tissue” is simply the nght of choice in reard to any aspect of an individual's life, as long as it is legal. Vera Willett North Vancouver NV homeowner wants fair hearing Dear Editor: We recently applied to council for spot zoning so that we did not have to demohsh a corner of our existing 25-year-old home. At first reading, at which councd voted 4-2 m= our favour, Mayor Bell did not vote. At second reading the voting was 42 against us. with Mayor Bell votung against us 1 would hke to ask how council could be decisively and their minds at sccond reading with first « hange in our favour at mystenously evidence ho new being produced at public heanng? Why did Mayor Beil choose to vote - and against us - at 2nd reading? Mayor Bell stated = at council meeting that many houses in North Vancouver Distnct have had comers removed because of plan- mng requirements — would he like to name even one? Mayor Beli has also stated that the corner of our house is a fire hazard ~ why — when our average sidcyard 1s six feet, and there ts over eight feet minimum distance between us neighbors house? Has Mayor Bell not heard of LY lots? ap ten — or and our Council proved a special request for subdivision of a 66° lot into two 33’ lots in Deep Cove just a month ago. They can have 10% sideyards — are they a fire hazard Mr. Bell? 1 think the questions need to swered for the ourselves above be an- bencfit of and all homcowners in North Vancouver Distnct, and perhaps member of council would hke to open a new hearnng before council, at which all members are one present. I -hold nothing agaist dedicated minority groups, but feel that the supporters of Pro-Life (or Antj-Abortionists) acted irresponsibly when they tied to gain contro! of the Board followers last year. I firmly believe that they were not speaking for the majority of the community. If those of us who believe in commannity choice are not at the meeting on September 17 this might well be the case agam, — by default. I also feel that this is not just a fight over the issue of abortion, but a matter of moral principic, and I would feel much the same about any mimornty group pre- empting the seats pf a PUBLIC society such as the LGH without a TRUE vote for the community. We live in a democratic society and perhaps we should not forget that it ts indeed a privilege to do so. If anyone is interested m joming the Hospital Society im order to have a vote September 17th, you must send in your application by July 31st. : Forms may be picked up at The North Shore Women's Centre, 3255 Edgemont Bhlvd., North Vancouver or Community Help and In- formation Centre, 1412 Marine Drive, West Van- couver.
