FIFTH VIOLENT CLASH THIS YEAR “AMSTERDAM, Netherlan- ds (UPI) - Hundreds of young rioters, urged on by a pirate radio station, fought police into the early hours Tuesday in the fifth violent clash this year between authorities and squatters protesting Amsterdam's critical housing shortage. The rioters looted four t ‘department stores, built barricades across narrow canal streets, set several fires, pushed at least one car into the water and battled police with clubs and paving stones for eight hours. Eight policemen and at least six civilians were in- jured in the clashes that E pitted 250 special mobile f officers armed with clubs and tear gas against about 400 helmeted = youths. arrested in the fighting. , The fighting began after Squatters again seized a house they had occupied until July 3, when police evicted them twice in one day. The building had since been legally occupied by an English family, who were themselves ejected by the squatters Sunday. On Monday evening, 30 plainclothes police evicted the squatters from the house in 15 minutes and arrested four people, but just managed to repel a counter- attack by squatters with crowbars and axe handles. The news of the police action spread and crowds began to gather with. youths taunting and stoning the police. The illegal squatters’ radio station, Radio Free Keyser, called for support from sympathizers, but warned that no one should go to the scene without helmets, protective clothes and a weapon of some sort. The radio station also warmed that plainclothes police were moving about in the crowd arresting stone- throwers and offered advice on resisting or evading arrest. : Four department stores and a number of small shops around the historic Dam Square Palace in the heart of Amsterdam’s old city were looted by rioters who smashed display windows. were Fires started on sidewalks, at a renovation site and in wooden municipal site-office wagons.
