AUTOMOTIVE Protect car’s finish from reality of mean streets THE NUMBER one cus- tomer comment today about a new vehicle’s appearance is “The paint job looks fantastic!’’ Over the last decade paint tech- nology has progressed by leaps and bounds. Many of today’s cars have base coat/clear coat finishes designed to give them that ““showroom’’ appearance. But what happens when the vehicle enters the mean streets of dirt, grime, acid rain and con- tinual exposure to ultraviolet rays from the sun? ‘Unless they are treated proper- ly, base coat/clear coat finishes “won't remain ‘factory fresh’ for’ very long,’’says Ziebart Canada president Doug Johnston. Johnston points out that paint finishes are very susceptible to abrasives that scratch and mar a vehicle’s surface.“ These include . heavy-duty brushes used by most commercial car washes and winter driving conditions such as slippery and icy roads. ‘Additionally, he notes, there are many peaks: and valieys in the clear coat finish that tend to trap dirt, salt and moisture, reducing the car’s luster and eventually damaging the paint. 46 In warm-weather areas and in the summer, never wash your vehicle under a hot sun. 3? Ultraviolet rays from the sun compound the problem through oxidation of the paint pigment after it has been subjected to harmful elements, especially acid rain. Ziebart, along with other rustproofing operations, offers paint protection which helps to eliminate these problems in two ways: © 1!) It bonds to the vehicle’s sur- face to create a flawless finish. . @ 2) it features ultraviolet inhib- itors that prevent the paint from fading. Most companies offer a lifetime warranty that is good for the life of the new vehicle and is transfer- table to the next owner when the vehicle is sold. in addition, Ziebart offers a lifetime annual maintenance program called CAR plus. Every year all protected surfaces are inspected and Ziebart paint sealant is automatically reapplied to ensure lasting protection and shine. Johnston says car and truck owners can do much to miniraize paint detericration. “‘We recommend hand-washing the vehicle frequently, using a mild solution that contains no acid,’* he says. ‘‘More important- ly, in warm-weather areas and in the summer, never wash your vehicle under a hot sun.’’ If you have a car cleaned at a commercial car wash, Johnston says to make certain the water is pure. Re-cycled water can be sat- urated with dirt, salt and chemi- cals that are harmful to the paint finish. “A new car or truck represents a sizeable investment for most owners,”’ he states. “The rela- tively minor cost of paint protec- tion will go a long way toward adding to the vehicle’s value at trade-in time.”’ Toolkit promotes carpooling THE “RIDESHARE Toolkit” — a new step-by-step guide to promoting, setting up and maintaining carpools — was launched recently by Energy Mines Minister Anne Edwards. The Toolkit was developed under her ministry’s FuelSmart program. ‘*Carpooling is a way to cut the costs of the single-occupant’ vehi- cle. People who:carpool not only reduce their use of fuel, but help us to achieve cleaner air, cut con- gestion, and have lower com- muting costs,”’ said Edwards. “*The Toolkit shows how to in- troduce carpooling to organiza- tions of all kinds — from offices and hospitals to colleges and fac- tories.”’ Edwards Jaunched the Toolkit at Simon Fraser University, where another FuelSmart initiative NO PENALTY EARLY SETTLEMENT FLOATING OR FIXED INTEREST RATES By A.P.
