8 - Friday, January 31, 1992 - North Shore News MAILBOX Staying together worth the price Dear Editor: | want to thank you for publishing the excellent: guest col- umn ‘fs there a Canada in your future?"’ by Don Lanskail on Dec. 8, 1991, His message of tolerance and mutual respect for all Canadians echoes the thoughts of our Com- missioner of Official Languages, Dr. Victor Goldbloom. We. too, believe that a better understanding of Canadian history, combined with a spirit of generosity towards those whose needs are different from our own, will lead us to find a solution to this constitutional debate which is fair to all. yet allows the country to. stay together. In reality, it does not require a large expenditure of funds or yer- sonnel to provide the very basic level of service to francophone residents of British Columbia which is required under official bilingualism. Only 426 of the 20,026 positions in the federal government in British Columbia (2.1%) are designated as bilingual. Bilingual anglophones hold 281 or 66% of those jobs. J mention only federal services because the provisions of the Of- ficial Languages Act apply only to the federal government and to the government of the province of New Brunswick. No other provincial or municipal government is obligated to supply service in the minority Doug Collins responds to Rafe Mair Dear Editor: Rafe Mair has been ... uh ... doing his letters, Good. Didn't know he could write. Typically, he avoids ... ub ... mentioning the reason for my Jan. 8 column, which was that he had the organizers of the ‘‘anti-racist’’ demo against the North Shore News on the air without having me on, | being his main target. And the fellow is inventive, claiming he tried to save my job when we were on CJOR, and that I was dropped because I kept say- ing ‘“Uh.’’ Which is news to me and everyone else who was there. He ... uh ... also forgets to mention he was spending all his time trying unsuccessfully to ... uh . save his own job. For he too was ... uh ... dumped, his ratings not being exactly wonderful. £ was dumped because ... uh ... the new management didn’t like what | was saying. Mair is a great journalist, all right. He calls me names on the air but ... uh ... doesn’t have the spine to face me in the studio. In fact, it is likely that most British Colum- bians will never be directly af- fected by official bilingualism. The costs to the federal govern- ment ure not excessive: about $3 for every $17.000 spent on pro- grams and services, As Mr. Lanskail stated in’ his cohnun, the Canada is worth some price."” OF- fictal biHingualism is rer an expen- sive way to allow this country to stay logether.
