i mailbox - Wednesday, January 18, 1984 - North Shore News Grubel saw only what he wanted Dear Editor I wish to object to the silly arguments and reporting in the two articles you have published by Professor Grubel (Jan. .1 and 8) based on his impressions of Chile while attending an academic conference there. Having attended a number of academic conferences in unfamiliar cities, I can attest to how little of those cities I was able to see while listening to learned papers and discus- sions, and engaging in the Gift for NEWS carrier Dear Editor: ] would like to send a small **Thank you’’ gift to whoever is delivering the North Shore News to my home. The gift is not only to say thank you for the regular delivery but also to show my apreciation for the person who delivers and puts it in a smal! barrel I have put out- side the house because my overhang is not enough to save the paper getting wet in this lovely weather of ours. 1 also get the Province and the Sun. and in spite of regular requests I still find both those newspapers dumped outside the house and many times I receive it damp to the extent that it is fit for garbage only. 1 would be most obliged if someone can phone my secretary, Mrs. Audrey Owen with theaddress of the carrier and I will arrange for the gift to be delivered. Thanks. May | also take this oppor- tunity to compliment you on the fine newspaper you put out. Please keep up the good work. Wish you and all at the North Shore News much hap- piness and good health. Grubel does not tell us how long he stayed in Chile out- side timespent at the con- ference, how widely he travelled there, or how deeply he was able to investigate any particular environment. Presumably the ‘‘tennis club” is a_ well-guarded establishment for the local wealthy and visiting dignitaries. Did Grubel glimpse some slums from a bus and just assume that they were no worse than many elsewhere, or did he have the opportunity to study the slums in detail before con- cluding that they were better than.some parts of Chicago? (My own brief look at urban slums in a South American country more democratic than present-day Chile was completely devastating; I could never speak lightly of this experience.) As _ for Chileans he spoke to: to what class did they belong, how fluent is his Spaniish, and how much criticism did he.ex- pect to hear of a government with a history of savage repression of dissent? Also, did he expect secret agents to wear badges saying ‘‘Secret Agent’’? After so many eyewitness reports and such extensive media coverage of torture and massacre in Chile, for draperies by S. Such denial of well-documented fact is wor- thy of 1984. Grubel darkly suggests that the difference between media coverage of Chile and his own impressions of downtown Santiago may be due to ‘‘communist pro- paganda and _ misinforma- tion’’.
