W. Van playwright
tells tales of spies

WHEN SOVIET cypher clerk Igor
Gouzenko defected in Ottawa in
1945, a whole new world of spies,
subterfuge, mystery and betrayal
came to light in Canada.

“Its more than a_ literary
genre,’’ said West Vancouver
playwright Steve Petch, whose spy
tale Service opens at the Water-
front Theatre tonight.

“It's been real-life over the past
40 years since (that) defection."’

“I was interested in how these
events affected Canada and what

started the witch hunt all through
the civil service,"* explained Petch,
35.

“Tm also interested in why does
one make the choice to become a
traitor.””

From his first play produced be-
fore he finished university, Service
marks just one of a host of latest
theatrical efforts for the former
psychology student.

Starting production soon is
Petch’s series of radio plays, The
Black Persian.

Performing in Service are Bren-
da Robins, John Dolan, Hardee
Lineham, Donna Carroll White
and Benda Pannock, who meets
the spy coming in from the cold.

Continuing the New Play Cen-
tre’s season, Service runs until
March 26.
