The Packard epitomizes
the classic era from 1925 to
1935. The company had
already pioneered
development of the steering
wheel and the H-slot trans-
mission; and Packards were
the first automobiles to cross
the continent when, in 1903,
a stock model ‘F’ christened
“Old Pacific” set a path-
finding race record between

and, in 1925, began
replacing its standard six-
cylinder units with these
models. Throughout the life
of the make, through to
1955, the straight-eight was
the backbone of the Packard
line.

The straight-eight, or in-
line cylinder arrangement
(as opposed to the Vee-
eight), was highly popular in

San Francisco and New the Twenties, thanks to the

Packard’s reputation was

The 1928 model was a
worthy machine, but the
combination of economic

General Motors’ fortunes
took its effect. In 1930 the

average buyer could not
afford a prestige car, and the
wealthy were turning to the
novelty of the Cadillac V-16.
Packard desperately
enlarged its model line and
produced the classic V-12 of
1932; but the firm had lost its
hold on the luxury field and
declined steadily until the
1950's when a merger with
Studebaker hastened the end
of Packard production.
