To create the illusion of space, builders are working design magic with raised and vaulted ceilings, floor-to-ceiling windows, straiegically placed mirrors, and skylights that splash natural light through the house. Skylights are being used to turn dark, stuffy at- tics into livable space. Skylights are one of the most dramatic and simplest ways of making your present home feel larger. No matter whether you have a sloped or flat roof, thick roofing tiles or asphalt shingles, there’s a skylight for you: the number of skylight designs and features have been going through the roof, along with skylight sales. Now you can buy fully-assemb!- ed, ready-to-use skylights that can dramatically reduce installation time and human error. Low-profile glass windows have frameworks made of durable, weather-proof thermoplestic that wiil not deteriorate like wood, and have molded, built-in featurcs like condensation gutters. If there’s an attic above the room you want to light, a contrac- tor or carpenter can build a light shaft that directs daylight from the rooftop skylight through the attic to the desired location. Bonemeal helps new roots From page 13 after you have removed any clumps of soil, use a sharp knife to divide the rhizomes into smaller pieces. Each piece should have three or more healthy ‘eyes’ from which new growth can sprout. Replant divisions at the proper spacing for your particular plant (library again) and cover them completely with soil. Irises are the exception. They should be laid oa the ground horizontally and covered only to a third the thickness of the rhizome. This will prevent rotting. Fibrous and fleshy-rooted perennials such as the hosta, day lily, and shasta daisy, all require similar treatment. Most of these grow ‘crowns’ or sprouting points within the clump. These mat together, becoming almost im- penetrable with age. The easiest method is to dig up the clump to be divided in its en- _ tizety. Now if you place two digg- ing forks back-to-back into the centre of the clump with the tips together, simply pressing on the handles together will divide the clump nicely. Once again, remove any clumps of clinging soil along with any broken, severely bruised, or diseased roots. Each clump should have from one to three healthy, undamaged crowns depending on variety. Plant each division at the proper spacing, gently spreading the roots out in the planting hole. Cover each section so that the crown shows just above the surrounding soil. As with most replanting or new planting, the addition of a high phosphorous/potassium fertilizer will hasten the start of new roots. I prefer the organic, slow-release characteristics of bonemeal. In the course of dividing garden perennials you will eventually run out of room in your garden. Fear not. You will find that your friends and neighbors will be delighted to relieve you of any surplus. Thanks to the Classifieds new career. Greater challenge. An @ opportunity to excel, to expand.
