ie a g a sae - NEW CA NDY FLICK MORE MYSTERIOUS THAN FUNNY Pass the buck Uncle Buck * (Universal) Rated M (at the Granville, Oakridge, Scott, Coquitlam, Station Sq., Royal Centre, Park & Tilford and Clearbrook cinemas). } BUCK RUSSELL John Candy) has his fingers crossed. After forty years of dodging commitment, he has made a promise to his girlfriend, Geniece (Amy Madigan). Tomor- row morning, he’ll go to work for her and racetracks will be only a fond memory. But, at midnight, his horse comes in. It’s a call from his brother asking him to babysit for a few days. His brother has a niggl- ing doubt about Buck's capabili- ties but, after all, he’s family and it’s an emergency. His sister-in-law has more than a few qualms abcut leaving her kids in the care of an unemployed bungler. After all, the last time he was over, he burned the bushes while barbecuing hot dogs. ~The two youngest, Maisie (Gaby Hoffman) and Miles (Macaulay Culkin), are sitcom-cute except for the odd swear word. Fif- teen-year-old Thea (jean Kelly), however, does more than swear by alternating between sarcasm and vindictiveness to make her uncle’s life miserable. John Candy handles this raie of the well-meaning boor who ultimately triumphs about as weil as he has in his past half-dozen films. ‘The trouble is the script. It’s film review more of a mystery than a comedy. Why do both parents have to leave to begin with? Why do these bland or annoying kids rouse Buck’s slumbering parental in- stinct? Why does he make pan- cakes so big he needs a snow shovel to flip them? And why does everyone have such peculiar names? The solution to all this head- scratching is simple. Pass the Buck. The heroine of Miss Baba... is foundling Oola, an orphaned poodle raised by the prim and. proper Miss Baba. On her birthday several years after she was leit at the orphanage, Oola is informed by Miss Baba that the only clue to her parents’ identity is a mysterious ring inscribed in a foreign language. . . With the help of Professor Nod (‘a wooly yak who specializes in. ancient Asian languages, most of them extinct’) at the Museum of Animal Arts, Qola sets off on a dangerous odyssey of discovery. She is aided in this quest by the Dolly Lama (“probably the only llama in Mongolia’), Dash (“an evil-smelling camel with an even worse disposition’’), and a host of other wacky characters. Miss Saba in The Doorknob of Destiny is a comic book-like spoof that smacks of Indiana Jones and the adveniure sezials that were once a staple of movie matinees. ! defy any adult to try reading this without chuckling throughout.
