Van school STUDENTS AT West Vancouver's Gleneagies Elementary School will hear the opera Hansel and Gretel May 11 when a one-hour fairy tale adaptation is performed. Featuring a cast of experienced singers, the production is joined by a group of students recommended to act as the angels and the ginger- bread children. Under direction of soprano Ta- tiana Vasilieva-Maloff, the five- year-old North Vancouver-based Opera on the Go series also in- cludes programs from composers such as Mozart, Rossini and Bizet shown in secondary and elemen- tary schools. Vasilieva-Maloff believes opera should be both entertaining and educational, performing the opera’s segments with an on-going commentary and explanation. “I thought operas were very boring, but your show was very enjoyable," one student said fol- lowing a recent Opera on the Go performance. ‘‘I think your operas were really great,’’ said another. “T like the way you act and sing.”’ The Hansel and Gretel opera starts at 1 p.m. For more details: call 980-4329, (ook your way to a healthier heart HEART DISEASE is the major cause of death in Canada.
