Unravel money mysteries

TEACHING children about
money and how to manage it can
be both worthwhile and fun.

It is a challenge to find interest-
ing and entertaining ways for
children to Jearn about money.
Puzzles, games and activities can
offer opportunities for children to
become more aware of money
management,

If children learn things such as
the terms associated with money,
wise handling of earnings,
budgeting, using banking services,
comparison shopping and other
useful information, it can give
them a head start on things they
will need to know later on in life.

Ask your child to choose some-
thing he or she would really like to
have, find out how much it costs
and then think of ways of earning

the money to buy it.

For example, if your child wants
to get a bicycle, have him look at
advertisements, compare the
features and prices of each and
decide which one is right for him.

Children can learn how to make
up a budget, starting with how
much money is available from an
allowance or earnings.

Holding a yard sale of unwanted
and unneeded articles can be a
good way to learn how a small
business operates. The whole fami-
ly could organize it.

Things to consider are: timing of
the sale, the duration, the items to
be sold, expenses such as signs and
Price tags, advertising, refi. -h-
ments (if any), pricing, the respon-
sibility of each member of the
family and division of the profits.
