EE mailbox ><] _. a Norgate pub fears have sound basis Dear Editor I would like to respond to Mr. Ross Blackwell’s letter to the North Shore News dated June 13 (Pub Opposition unjustified). The democratic process certainly allows Mr. Blackwell to express his sup- port for the proposed Pemberton Pub. However, the democratic process and a public hearing allow the residents of Norgate to tell the policicians how they feel about the proposed develop- ment as well. And so they did. I also feel that it is the residents who are 7 ifected by this proposed ¢ velopment whose opinion should be most heavily weighed and not the opinions of the drive-in traffic to a proposed walk-in establishment. _ The inevitable comparison of the English Pub to the Neighborhood Pub will emerge when any application for said pub is proposed. However, if an area the size of the North Shore were in England, it would already have in excess of 100 pubs (a conservative estimate, I’m sure). If the Pemberton ap- plication were for the 101st Neighborhood Pub on the North Shore, I wonder if there would be the same op- position in Norgate (or Capilano, Blueridge, Lynn Valley, etc.) 1 doubt there has been a BEACH CHAIR & CARRY-ALL Reg. *19°° Lightweight, strong folding frame. Reg. 19.95 Slightly Marked - 4 Neighborhood Pub applica- tion which has proceeded without some local residen- tial opposition (Queens Cross, Sager’s Pub, for ex- ample.) As a result, Norgate residents are not unique in their opposition. They are, in fact, responsible citizens con- cerned about the quality of life they expect from the neighborhood in which they chose to live. Alderman Jim Ball’s remarks about Norgate residents ‘‘being spooked by anything that moves’’ should also be taken exception to by residents of Norgate Park. In fact, all residents of Norgate should be spooked by any political movement in the neighborhood if proposals such as the high density, low cost housing on 16th street and the 38° wide road pro- posed for 15th Street are ex- amples of the things that are ‘“moving’’. If I might be allowed the same licence of generaliza- tion that Mr. Blackwell employed in his letter, I would make the following comment. Mr. Blackwell would have to drive a double decker bus a long way to find enough Englishmen to fill the top who feel the B.C. Neighborhood Pub bears any resemblance to an English Pub. Many English Pubs have little or no parking pro- vided. English Pubs close Sets Only Ve: PRICE *199°° WEST VAN FURNITURE-LEISURE LIVING between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. they are generally smaller than the proposed pub (65 seats and 32 parking spaces). It might also interest Mr. Blackwell to know that the area on Pemberton proposed for this pub will have to undergo a change of zone ap- plication from industrial to commercial before the Pemberton Pub can be considered. I feel the opposition of the Norgate residents is justifiable to those who count the most in this instance. Their Neighborhood. Today | drove to what used to be my favorite place in West Van with the idea of purchasing some property This place is Horseshoe Bay. ~‘ But no thanks. It’s not the place I knew and loved. It’s just an outsized parking lot with hundreds of cars parked all over what used to be one of the bdeautiful places in this province, a disgraceful waste of a once beautiful place.
