Ca A26 - Friday, May 4, 1984 - North Shore News LGH tackles abuse LIONS GATE Hospital officials have established a Child Protection Team to combat child abuse and neglect of young children and adolescents. By JOANNE MacDONALD The team, which swung into operation on March 15, consists of a pediatrician, a pediatnc head nurse and a hospital social worker. Ac- cording to a news release issued by the hospital, the team assists the referring physician m assessment, in- tervention and follow-up. The hospital’s Director of Social Services, Ina Hollick-Kenyon says evidence of child abuse or neglect has come to the hospital’s attention due to a combination of factors: ‘the incidents are occurring more frequently and doctors are becoming more aware of the problem. “*It’s a matter of the times and people are under a lot More tension. Plus a lot of people are now more willing to bring these things out into the open,”” says Hollick- Kenyon. Province-wide figures released this week by the Ministry of Human Resources show reported cases of child abuse in- creased dramatically from 1981 to 1982. The Mimistry’s 1983 an- nual report, tabled in the Legislature yesterday, revealed that in 1982, a total of 1,536 cases were reported, compared to 1,286 reported in 1981. @dbe Ministry’s 24-hour Helpline received a total of $2,200 aid for N. Calls pertaining to sexual abuse totalled 194, while cases of neglect produced 675 calls. With the assistance of the Ministry of Human Resources, a doctor can ar- range for the removal of a child from a dangerous situation and then call on the specialized team to provide a medical and social evalua- tion of the case. However, in order to utilize the team, the child must first be admitted to hospital. “We have a responsibility to involve the Ministry of Human Resources, and a member of the Ministry would sit on the team. It’s a hospital process,’’ says Hollick-Kenyon. “IF a child is admitted through emergency and needs treatment, we would try to contact the parent and guardian. If a child is ad- mitted other than_throlgh emergency, -the? family doc- tor would then discuss the Situation with the family. We can’t treat a_ child without the family’s permission.”’ Although the Ministry of Human Resources has the authority under the Family and Child Services Act to remove ai child from a suspected dangerous situation, Lee Forrest, the District Supervisor of the Lynnmour office, says Ministry personnel must have just cause under the Act to actually take the child out of the home. “*We do have the authority to investigate cer- taim circumstances. If whoever has the child refuses entry to us, then we must get a court order to enter the premises,’’ says Forrest “*But very carely do we need to get a court order. The famihes are usually) ones we've worked with before "' Another impetus behind the Team is the legislation which protects everyone, including physicians, who reports suspected cases of child abuse or neglect The legistation, part of the Family and Child Services Act enacted in 1980, applies to anyone reasonable and = probable grounds to believe that a case of child abuse of neglect ts taking place Forrest says the Act verrides any clam of con entialy cxcept that of a lawyer/chent ‘Tthatreaabyp who has Fathure to report suspectec cases would constitute an offence Ihe EGsht Child Protec NO) St AMS, NO) MIL Dt w CUSTOM COVE TUBWALLS ORIGINAL 1-Pce BATHTUB SURROUND $709” installed ALL MATERIALS (5S A APPROVED Protessionafly instafted & Fully Guaramteced CAMP LE TE BATE RIC on RENOVA TIONS, AND) SHOWER (ocr ore Call Today 433-1112 of 433-9444 Shona Plano bade ie 10 OO to 4 OOF FM Meo seat 2939 Kangsway Var 1 EIR Woot Paragre rr ct No) MAINTE NANG | Nod HAG RING, tion Team will also be utilizing the skills of the facility’s emergency nurses.
