B4 - Sunday, April 10, 1983 - North Shore News AGING GAME It's allin the mind By PETER LORIMER Whenever I’m _ reminded that I’ve been playing professional soccer for 21 seasons, it seems like a long time. But if I forget about PETER LORIMER the numbers, it just doesn’t seem all that long ago that I was toiling for the Dundee schoolboys team when | was 14. Today, at 36, I realize that I'm fortunate to still be playing this wonderful game. In late November last year I noticed that I was getting a bit jumpy. I needed to get back playing. Over the years, I’ve grown so ac- customed to the game and my love for it, that I guess I've become totally ad- dicted. In my mind and body, I knew it was time to get playing again. When I look around and see the numbers of players that have had to give up the game for one reason or another, I consider myself very fortunate. And when I see how many people are unhappy at their work, | really do become thankful that I've been able to do what I love for this length of time. Like so many other British youngsters 1 went to a professional team at the age of 15. In my case it was Leeds United where I spent the next 16 years, some of them alongside Johnny Giles. Dunng that tme I was selected on 2! occasions to play for Scotland including the 1974 World Cup in Munich, West Germany. We went out after the first round without having lost a game! After Leeds it was two years with Toronto Blizzard and now my third with Whitecaps as a playing /assistant coach. There's no magic secret to a long career. I enjoy the game and I enjoy the people I work with. That, plus Staying in shape and taking care of myself goes a long way to keeping everything in working order. Along the way I’ve had my share of injunes, including broken ribs two years ago. But nothing has ever been that senous that I've had to consider giving up the game. As long as |] feel I'm contnbuting to the good of the team, and as long as I'm healthy and enjoy playing I'll keep going. I'd like to have the sort of longevity hke Johnny Giles, who played for the Republic of Ireland at the age of 38 and the legendary Sir Stanley Matthews, who was over 50 and still a pro! Remember Satchel Paige, the baseball pitcher? He played in the major leagues into his fifties if not his sixties (he just wouldn't tell anyone his real age). Paige once made a comment about age that could serve all of us. He said: “How old do you think you'd be if you didn't know how old you were?” It's all in the mind.
