In a letter to council, the Court House (Lions Gate) Racquet Club pleaded for District to allow. the organization to proceed subdividing six lots on its property at 1185 West 26th Street to pay off a massive - debt of about $800,000. “We have tried all the ways we know of to operate the facility economically,” explained Terry Grimwood, Managing director of the racquet club. “We reduced staff, increased membership and increased our court usage.” However, he added that since the club raised its user fees it has “lost the majority of our members”. Grimwood told council that the economic hard times deter the group from further member fee in- creases and as a result the racquet club must “carry a $750,000 debt which it cannot continue to do”. But Alderman Peter Powell noted that when the group purchased the Lions Gate property about one- and-a-half years ago it was zoned recreational and the . economic climate was already severe. “If the economics is so bad now (that the racquet club is seeking to subdivide its property) they should have foreseen it a year ago. YH vote against any bylaw that comes up (to change the property designation).” According the Grimwood, the Court House Racquet Sports group wrangled with District to rezone the land about five months ago at which time no public op- position was voiced. “We've contributed substantially to the recreational stock on the North Shore,” he said. “And this proposal ensures the continued operation of a needed recreation facility.” | Alderman Ernie Crist, however, suggested District review the rezoning ap- plication “in light of the situation (economic depression) we owe it to the Introducing versatile stylist Terry ~formerty of The Bay Downtown e introductory price e free consultations Peter James Hair Design Ltd. 1352 Marine Drive West Vancouver Per 926-O9Nl MATTRESS SALE | All floor samples & over stocked items to clear in- cluding foam mattresses.
