Seventy-eight percent of all Canadians and 83 percent of the residents of the province of Quebec live in cities “or towns. Never- theless, the visual arts in Canada remain beholden to the countryside and to nature. The Group of Seven, Tom Thomson and Emily Carr spring readily to mind as playing a large part in promoting landscape as the country’s great cultural symbol, especially in English @anada. “. The emphasis shifted , Slightly in the period bet- ween the wars and later during -the forties and fifties yan scene when a number of Quebec artists began looking at the city. However, although abstract surrealist and imaginary art had been born in the great cities of the world, it made little reference to the city itself. It took a_ resurgence of representational art to change this emphasis, and during the seventies the urban’ environment has slowly become the preferred subject for many representational painters. The exhibition City Life (Vivre en Ville) is designed to sum up these efforts. BS - Wednesday, June 24, 1981 - North Shore News e i ; 1eW Quebec artists were in- vited to submit painted or mixed media works on the theme City Life. The result is an exciting exhibition stretching from photorealism to the con- ceptual. — Accompanying the exhibition is an audio-visua! presentation on the history of urban representational art in Quebec.
