as playing a large part in
promoting landscape as the
country’s great cultural
symbol, especially in English

city. However, although
abstract surrealist and
imaginary art had been born
in the great cities of the
world, it made little
reference to the city itself. It
took a_ resurgence of
representational art to
change this emphasis, and
during the seventies the
urban’ environment has
slowly become the preferred
subject for many
representational painters.

The exhibition City Life
(Vivre en Ville) is designed
to sum up these efforts.
