Avenue, also in Vancouver, had been to the area just off the access road to the salmon hatchery a couple of days earlier with Jamie's older brother, George Fielder. They had enjoyed the area and commented how it would be a good place to build a play camp or a “fort.” Early Tuesday afternoon the two boys came over from Vancouver by bus to Capilano Road and took a trail off the hatchery access road, walking into the bush. But Tim tripped over a tree root and fell down a steep slope. TOO SLIPPERY Instead, Jamie clmbed down to help him and they found the terrain was too shppery to climb back up. They decided they would climb down the rest of the 300 ft. drop into the canyon and pick up a trail that would lead them back to the fish hatchery. Not only couldn't they find the trail but the wet moss canyon wall was too slippery to climb. They tried yelling and screaming for help but nobody heard them and they resigned themselves to Staying there overnight, sheltering beneath an overhang and lighting a fire. They heard a dog barking, which may well have been a bloodhound being used by the searchers, but although they started yelling again they were not heard at that time. Later in the morning, as the rescue party drew nearer, the boy's were heard and were lifted back up the canyon by rope after the rescuers had determined there were no trails in that area. OTHER SEARCHES At one time during the search it looked like the team was going to have to get diverted into a second search. While the rescuers had been scouring the area for them, they received another call that a young boy of about four had also gone missing in the same area. However, he was found by a member of the parks staff before the searchers had decided to split up into two parties. A search in the canyon for an elderly North Vancouver man was again called off after the canyon had once more been thoroughly searched Saturday. Rescue crews had joined the RCMP the previous week in checking the canyon when the 78-year-old man’s car had been found in the Cleveland Dam car park a few days after the man had been reported missing. The downstream stretch of the canyon has now been completely searched two or three times now and RCMP are investigating to try to learn if there is any chance the man may be elsewhere before any more searches are undertaken.
