_ Dear Editor: An article appeared in your Wednesday, June 21, paper, outlining that the Greater. Vancouver. Regional District (GVRD) has begun: its summer tours into our local watersheds so that the’ - public. can see where their. /drinking water comes from. As a participant in some of ” these tours it became’ evident to me that the’ central ‘reason “for these tours is to sell the public on the GVRD's forest “ management plan, ie: logging. the watershed’s old- “growth | ‘forests. : "As we have probably ‘all “heard before, the GVRD is “conducting logging ‘only if it has been: determined that it improves.” water. ° quality.” . Figure that one out! . ‘ :The excellent ‘photograph’. that accompanied the News: “article shows Derek Bonin, a «GVRD | Water... District ‘Forester, standing in front of a: /¢learcut.. in = the’ Capilano . Y {- Watershed. It is interesting to~ “note: that. right. below-. this clearcut lies . the Capilano. “ feservoir.: | have walked ‘this 4 /¢learcut and have. videotaped y: : trees blown down into ‘the water from the reservoir edge of this clearcut. What your photograph does not reveal is the unstable slope leading down into the reservoir where trees have been uprooted. Loose ‘soil is. crumbling right down into our. drinking water reservoir because of the logging from this clearcut. Blowing down of trees along the edges of clearcuts is a common phenomena caused by changes in wind dynamics. 1 encourage North Shore residents . concerned — about . logging, and ‘roadbuilding in. . their watersheds to gel on one of these ‘tours and sce. the destruction. that has hap- pened. Your tour host: will ratio- nalize the clearcuts as a pre-- vention ,to. forest. fires and insect outbreaks, but ask them what\has caused the loss of 4, 000 hectares of forest cover’ since 1960: logging or forest fires?. Ask them where they get. their paycheques from. Then watch the spin doctors go to work. : Ross Muirhead < Friends of The Watersheds “North Vancouver Me eS TAYE AL Rannegessanety sage Oar aed SERN Li .
