Munro has garnered con- siderable attention over the years with his loud, straightfor- ward comments. ~ He was known as Union Jack when he headed the Canadian division of the International Woodworkers of America (JWA). He was with the IWA from 1973 unl his retirement in 1991. He joined the Forest Alliance in 1991, an organiza- tion created to promote the interests of the industry, work- ers and resource communities. As well, he was a board member for the fast ferries project. As a testament to Munro’s good humour, former premier of B.C, and current Minister of Energy and Mines Dan Miller commented, “He is a loyal and devoted friend, and as evi- dence of this I would point out that Jack still talks to me despite the fact that I appoint- ed him to the board of direc- tors of B.C. Ferries.” Munro received the Order of Canada last year for his con- tributions to forest workers’ rights. His move from union pres- ident to chairman of the alliance drew sharp criticism fromm workers who felt that he was leaving workers’ concern in favour of joining the indus- try.
