SSS SSS source of € lection flyer questioned Dear Editor: No matter what your voted on in last weekend's civic election re: Waterfront Task Force reconamendations, one cannot help but wonder about the rather deceptive flyer that turned up in our mailbox a few days prior to “-: election day, . _ The flyer alluded to high rise buildings on the Deep Cove waterfront. Was this meant to be a scaré tactic for those unin- formed voters? I also had to question the timing of the delivery of this “picee (elcction week); and the lack of identifier — who te call ‘for more details on the intor- ation contained in the fiver. 22: Ripping Yarns has only. one flaw In the third to list para- graph you say that: ferries are a otis way” link.’ f they (ferries) 2 are conisid- vs da highway; why. are they \ no} under, the umbrella of the ing, i in y not betwecir coastal ° haps it’s time to peti- t election office to miake it mandatory that infor- mation pieces like this flyer, and the one put out by the “North Shore Concerned Citizens Association” contain hone contact along with information on where funding came from. Tam not sure if anyone has claimed responsibility for the waterfront flyer, bur Ecan only hope that the individuals involved in producing this item were not amongst those elected to our new council. Under the guise of present- ing, a seven-person slate that would replace several council- lors in a dysfunctional council, it managed to conceal the real objective, which was to con- struct an impenetrable wall in case the electorate passed the waterfront referendum. Last Tuesday, a notice arrived at many “(all2) district mail slots indicating that the North Shore Concerned Citizens Association was sup- porting a slate that it had cre- ated, There was no mention of the waterfront issue, The stat- ed “rationale” was: fiscal ‘business-like attitude, balanced ‘viewpoint, » and respect for the “environment, and ‘quality of life. An inquiry by the North Shore News Partially unmasked this association in the “Citizens Group | Picked District Slate Secretly” article published Nov. 16. It was a ~ good article, but ic was too late. The Concerned Citizens marketers made certain of that. In the same issue, the day prior to the election, the same ; ae — presumably — in a alt page advertisement, rein- forced the “rationale” that was contained i in the prior notice, ‘again without mentioning the ~ waterfront issue. - Any concerned citizen wha was going to exercise his or her democratic right to vote on the following “day could: cor- rectly or incorrectly conchide thar this slate was the mayor's slate, in part because it was consistent with. his stated desire to rid this community of several councillors The mayor, by virtue of his service, is politically astute, and had plen- ty of opportunity between Tuesday and Friday to set the record straight if he had cho- sen to do so. [t is unconceivable that the News would not have made space for Mayor Bell’s com- ments, given that the Friday article consunied nearly half a page. it is possible that the majority of the “slate” were not fully aware of its intent until the tap had been sprung. The good news is that having accomplished its sole objective - the “Coricerned . Citizens Association” will probably fade into the background and pay as much attention to council as it has in the past. Who are these concerned citizens who in their commu- niques did not provide sny “mechanism to cither identity or contact then? Probably, it is not a single person, but it could be Gary Hawthorn North Vancouver __- hawthorn. gary@hotmalicom tf Su, Bgestion: Estate Jewellery 1637 Lo N. Van. 983 6700 1730 Marine Drive, W.
