Prevent accidents

READING instructions may seem
basic, but year after year there are
preventable accidents involving
aerosol containers.

The following. are some safety
tips that will help ensure the pro-
per use of these containers.

* Read the instructions. Direc-
tions for various types of repellents
and insecticides vary with the pro-
duct. Each is formulated for a
specific use and should be handled
in the way intended by the manu-
facturer.

* Store insecticides safely. Choose
an area that is located away from
heat sources and out of the reach
of children.

Empty containers should be
disposed of safely; do not puncture
the container, incinerate it or
throw it into a fire.
¢ Insecticides containing pyrethrins
may be used in and out of doors
safely and effectively on most in-
sacts.

When used as an insecticide, the
pyrethrins break down to harmless
components in 24 to 48 hours.

* Never transfer an insecticide
from its own package to another
container,

It could be used incorrectly if

the package directions are discard-
ed, or the material could be mis-
taken for food or another house-
hold product.
* Many insecticides can be used
around food preparation areas if a
few simple precautions are follow-
ed.

Always cover any exposed food
and cooking utensils. If the uten-
sils are accidentally exposed to an
insecticide, wash in hot water with
detergent before using, and discard
any food that has been exposed.
Fish bowls and bird cages should
be removed from the room for at

* Do not eat or smoke when using
an insecticide. After using these
products wash hands before eating
