4 — Sunday, January 17, 1999 — North Shore News ew with accused killer slaved Intervi Bob Mackin Contributing Writer MICHAEL Caster told police he went cruising downtown with a friend after leaving work on Feb. 28, 1997, the night Mohammed Mirhadi was killed. Mirhadi was shot to death while watching a movie in a crowded North Vancouver theatre. A tape of Caster’s March 1, 1997 interview conducted by RCMP Const. Joanne Stephenson was played for a judge and jury in B.C. Supreme Court Thursday in New Westminster. Caster, 21, is on trial for the first-degree murder of Mirhadi. The 68-minute interview began at 3:36 p.m. in the back sear of an unmarked police car in the Capilano Mall parkade the afternoon following Mirhadi’s violent death. Caster told Stephenson he woke up and went to work at Kinney Shoes in Capilano Mall around 12:30 p.m. the previous day. He said he closed the store and left at “quarter to 10" with two friends, Kamron Mohajtepour and Hassan Shirani. Shirani decided to go home. Caster said he went as a passenger in the car Mohajtepour was driving. He said they went downtown to cruise along Robson, Richards and West Broadway, the streets “where all the major clubs are.” Caster and Mohajtepour returned to the North Shore after midnight to shoot pool for “an hour or hour and a half” at the Metropolis pool hall on Lonsdale. Caster said they decide* to go back downtown for more cruising around 1:30 a.m. Police surveillance video- tapes shown earlier in the tial depict a man police say was Caster leaving, Kinney Shoes after 9 p.m. on Feb, 2F, 1997 with a group of males. Another videorape showed Caster arriving in the lobby of Famous Players Esplanade 6 just before 9:39 p.m. Crown prosecutor Mark — Levitz believes Caster left the theatre after seeing Mirhadi. He claims Caster — returned through an exit door and shot Mirhadi three times around 11:10 p.m. Stephenson told Caster she wanted to speak to him after learning of an argument Caster had with Mirhadi that week. “People have argu- ments all the time, it doesn’t mean a whole bunch, but that’s why we're here to talk to you,” she said. Caster said the argument “wasn't anything of a big deal.” He said he met in the Capilano Mall parkade with David Darmadi and Mirhadi. “Its just thar Dave (Darmadi), um, owed some money for, uh, some stuff that one of my triends bought off bim. None of them, they were all no good or some- thing. My friend wanted his money back.” Caster later said Mohajtepour had purchased “six or seven hundred dol- lars” worth of car stereos. “They weren't to his liking and they were hot,” Caster said. Caster said he was pushed and = shoved “by Mirhadi. Darmadi_ testified last month that the meeting took place Feb. 26, 1997. After the argument, Caster said he phoned Darmadi to See Caster page 13 | Vancou North Council Meeting Agenda January 18 - 7:00 p.m. Live on Rogers Cable 4 Delegations * Mr. Cliff Sweency - Dollarton Foreshore Stabilization ¢ Mr. Les Sinnott, North Shore Youth Soccer Association - Joint Use of Facilities Agreement Council Matters 1.
