oe ‘ rez North Va n riders dominate races NORTH Vancouver mountain bike riders claimed two titles at the National Mountain Bike Championships on Blackcomb Mountain last weekend. On Saturday, Olympic silver medallist and two- time defending world cham- pion Alison Sydor won the women’s 30 km cross-coun- try race. Leslie Tomlinson was fourth and Trish Sinclair fifth. Both are from North Van. And a day later, Andrew Shandro, 25, took his third straight downhill title, cov- ering the 4.5 km course in six minutes 15.47 seconds. In the women’s downhill event, North Van’s Tania Chyplyk finished third Shandro’s average speed was more than 43 km-h (26.6 m.p.h.) on the twist- ing switchback course down the Wizard chairlift route, which featured an 1,855 foot vertical descenr. “It seems like I’ve spent half of my life at Whistler,” said an ecstatic Shandro fol- lowing the race. “I’ve got a lot of family and friends up here today and it’s nice to have a good race in front of all those people.” Shandro was a promising youth downhill ski racer before shifting to downhill mountain bike racing. A record field of more than 969 riders competed in the two-day national moun- tain bike championships, more than 50% higher than the previous record. THE Forest Hilla Senior Little League team captured the Canadian championships earfier this month and then represented Canada at the Littio Leagus World Series in Florida.
