A bumpy ride on the
newly repaired Second
Narrows has the chat-
tering teeth of bridge
users gnashing.

Many of them, such as
News letter writer Sheila
MeMinn, say the bridge is
bumpier now that it’s been
fixed.

“What happens, some win-
ter, when water accumulates
and freezes in all the dips,
grooves, bumps, chips and
valleys?” McMinn asked.

“I think the contractors
should be required to spend
the $250,000 bonus on a great
big sander and get out there
and correct all the errors made
so we can drive safely and qui-
etly on a better surface.”

McMinn refers to the
$250,000 bonus contractors
earned for completing the
bridge-deck work ahead of
schedule,

Provincial transportation
spokesman Brenda Jones said
the roadwork was done with
concrete, not smoother
asphalt. The bridge will be
bumpier.

However, she said she’s
only had one complaint, and
that was on an open-air show.

A new technique used on
the bridge helps reduce skid-
ding during poor weather and
creates a bit more tire vibra-
tion, Jones said. ,

The ministry is monitoring
the areas of the bridge deck
that are roughest and will rake
action if required, she said.

Meanwhile, work on the
bridge continues.

Transportation and Highways
placed a barrier to prevent
motorists from using a short
on-ramp at the end of Keith
Read that ICBC deemed
dangerous,

The barrier was christened
by a car travelling east that
was cut off Friday night by a
speeding BMW. The driver
lost control and crashed into
the barrier, police say.
