A DEVASTATING accident involving five teens occurred on the corner of Sutherland Avenue and 19th Street on Thursday, April 27. - Three teens who were in the car suffered from severe head injuries, lacerations and broken bones; another two were declared dead at the scene. The driver's blood alco- hol level was'said to be three times the legal limit. Many of the onlook- ers said that the accident could have been prevented. Fortunately, the above was a planned mock accident arranged by Sutherland’s CounterAttack Committee and the North Vancouver Fire Department. The week of April 24-28 was used to spread awareness of the risks taken when people drink and drive. “The CounterAttack Committee - is trying to raise awareness of RTA drinking and driving, traffic safety and to let people know that it's not okay to risk their fives and other peoples’ lives by dangerous dri- ving,” said Sutherland's CounterAuack Committee student president Alex Varju. Added student Megan Stubbs: “CounterAtiack Week is to raise awareness throughout the school, especially before Grad and other celebrations like that. It gives the students an opportunity to see what can happen and to remind them of the risks that they often already know about.” Assemblies were planned for each grade with several guest speakers invited to share their duily experiences with accident victims. Speakers included Constable Tom Seamen, Lions Gate Hospital nurse Leanne Mackenzie, Vancouver Hospital's Dr. Bruce Campana. and coroner Larry Campbell. But what got most of the stu- dents attention was the mock acci- dent which occurred on the Thursday of the CounterAttack week. The demonstration happened in front of Sutherland Secondary School during tunch break. Five members of the CounterAttack Committee were the accident vic- tims. Three of the students sat in the smushed-up cars, and the other - two lay on the ground in pools of blood. “T thought the mock accident was very informative; it was very good,” said student Samantha Watson. “It hits you hard and it ON SPECIALISTS Our 37th Year . 1.C.B.C. -'B.C.A.A. - A.R.A. really makes you realize the conse- quences of drinking and driving. It was preity realistic.” ‘Two of the most effective speak- ers during the week were Dr. Campana and Larry Campbell. ae Both pointed out what would hap- pen if you were dead or alive at the - accident scene. Dr. Campana pre- semted a graphic slide show with descriptions of what accident vic- tims go through after arriving at the hospital. : Tubes and pipes of all shapes and sizes ure shoved into almost | every orifice of the body whether See Simulated page 3 PietNtiueede a pie } i i Peay yakiu i ry ao eee arian APPROVED CENTRE | ACURA IN _ FREE COURTESY CARS 3 IN FOR COLLISION REPAIRS “LIFETIME GUARANTEE” ys x AS LONG AS YOU OWN YOUR CAR eb ao on con DON TAYLOR - Estimates,Consultationx Same owner 4 high tech equipped shop 985-7455 1995 TOYOTA COROLLA 4 dr. sedan, full factory equipment, plus legendary quality $13,718 ] 1995 TOYOTA TERCEL | 2 dr., coupe, cloth interior, exceptional quality In an TOYOTA CAMRY Fully featured 4 door sedans, ‘available from only 1995 TOYOTA XCAB 4x4 .
