FEREPLACES:

This odour is caused by “back-drafting.” Back-

drafting can be caused by a number of things. However,

H the cause of “back-drafting” is when air within the home

fis vented to the outside. In effect, a vacuum is created
and new air comes in to replace the vented air.

_ In other words, if there is a bathroom fan, a range
hood fan, or a window open which caused a “stacking”
effect in the home, it will draw outside air down the
chimney and on into the home, bringing the odour along

with it.

OUTSIDE REPLACEMENT AIR INTAKE. -
TO REDUCE BACKDRAFTING IN A COMMON
BRICK OUTSIDE WALL FIREPLACE:

We feel that you should seriously consider an inside
combustion intake vent. This must be installed near the
front or to the, side of your fireplace.

"One method of replacing air for combustion purpos-
es in the common brick fireplace is to install what we
like to call, a telief venting system. The relief vent simp-
ly replaces the air that your fireplace uses in burning. As
it is exhausting its gases out the chimney, replacement
air, in order to eliminate backdrafting, must be installed
in the fabric of the home. The attached detail is simple to

follow.

You can purchase the required materials at your
local building supply store. You will need the following:

1, 4" weatherproof outside wall cap vent

2. As many 4" ducts as needed to take it to the loca-
tion 12" to 16" in front of your fireplace box

3. A 5"to 4" reducer, in order to go into the elbow
and facilitate the register at the floor level.

This same method can be used and installed in the

wall, if it is more convenient to do so.. .

There are a number of ways of correcting backdraft- §
ing in fireplaces. This illustration shows a fireplace with
a screen only in front of the firebox area. If you have’
glass doors, you need sliding vent intakes at the lower. §
portion of the glass door ensemble. :
If you do not use the fireplace frequently, and want
to eliminate the draft from the chirnney, we recommend
that you consider the purchase of a product called the

DRAFi BUSTER. ‘The

DRAFTBUSTER can _ be

removed when you wish to use the fireplace and does
effectively climinate drafts when installed.
