To. Waste, a new elementary education - pro- gram on solid waste reduc- tion and recycling. -..The program includes free teacher workshops and materials and is available to educators throughout the region. Teachers interested in the one- ‘hour workshop and the No Time To. Waste education program -’. should contact Debra McAdam or Wendy Palynchuk of the GVRD at 432-6339. As. they work through the student-centred activities in the No Time To Waste program, stu- . dents will learn about the three Rs — reduce, reuse, recycle — and about the need for individual commitment to solve the problems of solid waste management in Greater Vancouver. Waste-aware children have a positive influence on parents and - other family members. A recent GVRD survey found that over 77% of GVRD residents say that children have influenced them to recycle or to contribute to other environmental! solutions and that recycling activity is more prevalent in households with children. The GVRD supports waste reduction and recycling education as part of its Creating Our Future initiative for a healthier, more liv- able region. EA NORTH VANCOLVER CITY COUNCIL Highrise gets 2nd hearing THERE WILL be a second public hearing on the con- troversial 10-storey ‘‘View- point’’ highrise proposed for 5th Street and Lonsdale Avenue in North Vancouver City. By Stephen Wisenthai Contributing Writer The Oct. 19 hearing will allow the developers to show what sort of building can be bailt on the site under the existing zoning. Councillors approved the unusual second hearing on Mon- day night to allow the developers to present the information, which they had not presented at the first rezoning hearing in August, when the council deferred a decision un- til all members could be present. Seigfried Toews, of Toews Ar- chitects, wrote to the council, re- questing the second hearing. In his letter, Toews said: ‘*The neighbors and councillors necd to know what can be built right now, without a public hearing so that they can grasp the concept of our proposal for a quality project. If after they understand the alter- native, but still wish to reject the application, we can, in good con- science, build what the neighbor- hood in the jong run may regret.” At Coun. Rod Clark’s sugges- tion, city council added a re- quirement that the developers pay for the costs of the second hear- ing, which will be publicized in advance.
