By Evelyn Jacob News Reporter Festival organizers are inviting artists of varying racial backgrounds to perform and ex- hibit their work in West Van- couver’s beaches, parks, streets and art studios in an effort to promote cultural harmony on the North Shore, ‘“*For example, an African drummer might explain his craft while an artist may talk about the cultural influences in his or her painting,”’ says project manager Colleen Reed. Reed says a number of local performers such as the Galiano Trio, Lance Harrison and his Dix- feland Band and African drummer Dido Morris (who is apparently bringing 75 different drums for kids to try out) have been signed up to play at the week-long event. Another aim of the festival, ac- cording t Reed, is to promote ties between West Vancouver's art and business communities. Fifteen restaurants have agreed to provide live entertainment on various evenings throughout the week. Ambleside and Dundarave mer- chants are volunteering their store fronts for a walking art tour, modelled after North Vancouver's First Night Art Walk. Called Art Beat, the curated tour, open to both emerging and established North Shore artists, is being organized by Ferry Building Gallery curator, Susan Aoki. Entry deadline is July 13. Reed says dance was not in- cluded in the festival program because West Vancouver lacks the proper facilities. *‘There isn’t one stage that’s good enough, which is areal shame."’ So far, West Vancouver District has contributed $13,000 to the festival, and Reed says festival staff must now raise $20,000 from the private and corporate sectors.
