MaILBox SHAW CASLE DECISION Restore Broadcast News Dear Editor: Shaw Cable, that monopolistic and parasitic North Shore televi- sion “‘service,’’ has done it again. Without so much as a ‘“‘by your leave,”’ it has cut the Broadcast News service, last seen on cable Channel 34. This unique news program pro- vided a truly valuable service for many groups of people (from shift workers to insomniacs, but especially the hearing-impaired) with its 24-hour review of news from around the world, Canada and B.C. The program covered news, sports, weather, the arts — even lottery results and trivia — all in 20-minute cycles that were con- stantly updated. Social services should pay costs Dear Editor: Thank you for the coverage of current mental health issues on the North Shore in your Dec. 3 issue. Peggy Trendell-Whittaker did a tremendous job in condensing a welter of information into such a short space. To avoid misyepresentation 1 would like the opportunity to clar- ify a remark attributed to me. This is in regard to psychologists’ fees being reported as ‘‘prohibitive."’ Actually, these fees are very rea- sonable considering the training of the therapists, and what 1 meant to point out was that many people simply did not have the money to pay for these services outside an insurance plan. We need a means to pay for these services through social in- surance often needed by the finan- cially disadvantaged. W.W. Allowing him to use once more his poisonous and bigoted pen for the promotion of hatred does not do credit to your otherwise useful newspaper. A. No other news service car- ried by Shaw Cable provided this feature — all of the other news channels require that the viewer be able to hear as well as see. And now Shaw has, quite arbitrarily, cut Broadcast News from its ser- vice. This is not, of course, the first time that Shaw Cable has acted in such a high-handed fashion. Their reputation for unilateral, self-serv- ing decision-making has been well Gov't of Canada * T-BILLS ROD CLARK documented over a number of years in the North Shore News.
