Before the evacuation (left), students plan in the event of a major disaster in the area. The school, located on Forsman Avenue, is situated near an indus- trial area, which incluces a number of chemical plants and a major dangerous goods rail corridor. COMMITTEE FORMED Bob Gribling is a parent of three children attending the school and sits on the school’s emergency procedures committee, which is a committee of the Lynnmour parents council. “We formed the committee last year to examine possible emergen- cies that could happen during school hours. We felt that being in an area of industrialization and earthquake potential, we should take the opportunity to protect our kids. “We still need to increase our first-aid training and we need to work through specific problems of chemical hazards in a major disaster,’’ Gribling said. During the school’s disaster ex- ercise, the students marched along the safest route to a Capilano Col- lege playing field. The field is a designated emergency centre located on high ground. EARTHQUAKE WEEK According to Lynnmour vice- principal Brad Lund, the exercise was a component of the school’s Earthquake Week. Students researched earthquake-related pro- jects, viewed a safety film and practised duck-and-cover drills. Instructors addressed popular misconceptions about earthquakes. Said Lund: ‘‘The parents are re- ? ally concerned about the chemical 2 plants in the area and what could happen if an earthquake struck. We're looking at the possibility of having gas masks provided for the students in the schoul. We’re not being pessimistic. We’re just trying By MICHAEL BECKER News Reporter to be ready.
