THE NORTH Shore News has
risen to the challenge of ‘Put up
or clam up,’’ and is going to be
cooking for top spot in the annual
Clam Chowder Contest at Water-
front Park July 24.

The News’ Clam Heaven team
will be seeking to cream the com-
petition in making the Boston-style
chowder, and avenge its second
place celebrity category finish last
year behind North Vancouver
District Council's Clam Bakers.

North Shore creamy chowder
connoisseurs in two categories —
professional food services and the
general public will try their
hand at concocting the best cream
clam chowder ever.

Already, the North Vancouver
City Fire Department team is
bragging that it can make the best
chowder on the North Shore, and
one of last year’s winners, The
Clam Bellies team, also claims to
have the best recipe anywhere.

Competition is expected to be
suff, so contestants should prepare
to whip up their chowder as aever
before.

Parks events coordinator and
contest organizer Rete McKay is
hoping for 20 entries — the same
as last year — for the upcoming
contest. Entries will be accepted
until July 15, but culinary con-
noisseurs are advised not to leave
registration until the !as: minute.

Anyone can enter but must it bring

their own ingredients and decorate
their tables in the same theme as
taeir costumes.

“We want people to dress up in
kookie costumes,"’ says Mckay.
“Y's strictly a fun day."

At 1:30 p.m. there will be a
short parade featuring local band
Freddy Fudpucker and his Rolling
Clones. Judging of best costume
will take place after the parade —
and then the fun begins.

Starting | from 2 p.m., partici-

pants have « mere one hour in
which to come up with the best
cream clam chowder possible — no
Manhattan style allowed, as that
would be too easy.

Well-known judges from the
food services industry will sample
the fare and award prizes.

engineering department at North
Vancouver City Hall. For more
