8 - Wednesday, February 25, 1987 °- North Shore News orth Shore homeowners to receive earthquake tips WHAT TO do in the event of an earthquake is the topic addressed in a pamphlet being issued today to North Shore homeowners. The information package was organized by the North and West Vancouver Emergency Program in conjunction with the three local municipalities. The pamphlet is called Self-Help Advice on Earthquakes. The following are some tips in case of an earthquake. “elf you are indoors, stay in- doors. Glass, decorative masonry, chinineys or other objects may fall. Take shelter under a desk, a table, or against an inside wall or inside a door frame. Keep away from win- dows, glass doors and tall fur- niture, such as bookcases. Do sot use elevators because they are sub- ject to possible power failure dur- ing an earthquake. *If you are outside, stay there. Move away from overhead power lines, dangling wires and stay away from the edge of buildings. If possible do not stop on bridges, on high- way overpasses or near tall buildings. *Before an carthquake: locate with your family and friends the safest places to take cover during an earthquake. Practise the ‘‘drop and cover’' self-protection method: drop to the floor on your knees, lees tucked under, head down with hands and arms folded over the head. Keep a flashlight, a battery-operated radio, a first-aid kit, a supply of food and water to last three days and a spare wrench in case it is necessary to turn off a leaking gas line. eAfter an earthquake: listen to the radio for instructions. Check 922-3361 for fires. Major fires should be reported to the fire department. Do no re-enter damaged buildings. Check utilities for breaks and leaks.
