A26 - Wednesday, May 2, 1984 - North Shore News EVERYONE GETS TOGETHER - Drinking driver crack- down co-operative effort ‘a first’ | By JOANNE MacDONALD DRINKING DRIVERS will be the special targets for provincial police forces during three different anti-drinking/driving blitzes in 1984, with graduating students to be among the first on the list. The Police Advisory Committee, created 18 months ago, has designated three periods during the year for the crackdowns: April 16 to May 21 (to coincide with graduation festivities), August 19 to September 16 {Labour Day and back to school activities), and December 8 to January 3 (the annual Christmas blitz). Bill Hubbard of the ICBC Traffic Safety Committee says the reasons behind the different target periods are varied. The most important is that there is a higher in- cidence of alcohol-related accidents during the spring and summer months than during the Christmas season. ‘“‘There’s more people on the roads during the summer, plus you have a couple of long weekends like the Easter and Labour Day weekends,”” says Hubbard. The Police Advisory Committee consists of rep- resentatives from = all of B.C. ‘'s municipal police forces and RCMP * subdivisions, ICBC, plus the Ministries of the Attorney General, and Transportation and Highways. The tepre- sentatives meet every other month in Vancouver According to Hubbard, the committee is the firse of ws kind in’ North America with them main objective being to reduce the pumber Of collisions rnvolving alcohol - Pach of the catnpaigns wall consist of candom road checks for umpaired drivers, Plus a continuation of the seatbelt enlorcement drive Says Hubbard lt's the first time there's been com prehensive cooperahon be tween all of the laws cp forcdment agencies in’ the Pprovinee 7" Members of the Comunittee have been publhaizing the campaign through cxtcnsive media coverage on local radio and television stations and community newspapers Phiee radio ads arc currcotly being played gratuitously for B¢ pohwemen compli ments of the B ¢ Associa tion of Broadcasters “We're trying to insetl an Awareness in people through all of the advertising the toad checks and by placing BAT mobiles wtround Gronking outlets the Nats Oovar veubenet os eeeot ter teasel as many poopie as graossitde bait to get people tose as iach self Control as possitbe NX detatled sutrsey oat No abeouved Sa Peerd PD drstracy ateas covering the years 19'O 1974 I9YTR and 198) Showed a noth cable decrcase roo ade Oho) use among Stuctents SS ee Save 50% ‘Easy Elegance” ‘Jack & Jill” NORTH VANCOUVER Capilano Mall $75 Martine Ortve North Vancuower 988 69): HECUIFAD «Aare.
