B3 - Wednesday, December 14, 1983 - North Shore News soccer all-stars begin training New names and new season IN AN effort to change the image and to admit what has been for years, the North Shore Under 16 and 18 Selects have now dropped the Select title and adopted the term ‘all-stars’. With a couple of ex- Patriate Scots now head- quartered on the North Shore coaching the show-case teams of young people, and the new all-star philosophy, the organization is hoping to have a much broader appeal both for the public and potential team members. The teams will be com- peting in an all-star league with teams from 10 districts throughout the lower mainiand and Vancouver Island. With Christmas drawing SWIM MEET Otters pound Seattle NORTH SHORE swimmers are emerging as a force to be reckoned with and West Van- couver Otter swim club is set- ting a good example. In a recent contest against Seattle Husky, Danielle Russell swam a 1:22.0 time in girls 11 and 12 100m _ back- stroke to put her in the top 50 in Canada in her class. Against Duncan Admiral, the West Van girls 13 and 14 200m freestyle relay team qualified for the top 15 in Canada with a 3:03.0 time. Team score in the Seattle meet was West Van Otters 735, Huskies 142. near, the Under 16s have about 27 players from their initial 52 on the roster. Even- tually, 16-18 players will be selected by head coach Bob Buchan, last year’s under 16 coach for the provincial entry. Buchan is a former profes- sional with Montrose in Scotland before coming to Canada where he has played and coached at various levels. Buchan has a C Licence from the Canadian Soccer Association.
