STUDENT EMPLOYMENT AS - Sanday, September 4, 1983 - North Shore News officers at the Canadian Employment Centre wrapped up their summer of work Wednesday, doing the final paperwork for what the project co-ordinator says has been a successful year. Jan supervisor of the student placement program, says 62 Janmohamed, per cent of those who registered with the program were placed this year, compared with only 37 per cent in 1982. “This year all of our staff tried very hard to assist as many students as possible,” Janmohamed says. He credits an increased awareness of the student céntre’s role among businesses as the main reason for the success. Year-end figures show that the number of students using the service was down from 1982, however. is likely due to the poor employment prospects students faced in 1982. “I suspect that a lot of students, secing what the economic conditions were like last year, started looking for summer work a lot earlier this year,” he says. Janmohamed feels the success of the program this year - with 203 more placements than a year ago - will continue next year. All six of the student placement officers who worked here until Wednesday, he says, intend to apply for those positions next year. But students, Jan- mohamed adds, will stand a better chance of finding employment next summer if they begin their search before the summer program recommiences in April, 1984. He suggests students begin early in the year by iden- tifying their skills and in- terests and then matching them to potential employers.
