He regretted International Trade Minister Ed Lumley recently returned from Japan empty-handed but said talks were continuing among Officials. “Since the Japanese are not disputing whether or not there will be an agreement but what the contents of the agreement will be, we do not deem it to be a matter of great concern whether we reach the agreement by April ! or not,” he said. MacGuigan said that although last year's agreement with Japan was not reached until June. it was retroactive and the same would apply this time. The total number of Japanese automobiles exported to Canada after April | will be taken into account when computing this year’s total under a new agreement, he said. (UPC) - General Motors of Canada will extend its rebate program to April 30 but will not follow the lead of the parent corporation and reduce interest rates on new car loans. Company spokesman Nick Hall said the rebate program started Feb. 1 has been “good for us” and meant increased car and_ truck sales. He said sales figures would be released within a few days. Under GM's rebate program, customers who purchase or order 1982 models until April 30 will receive rebates ranging from $500 to $2,000. In Detroit, General Motors Corp. said Tuesday it was cutting interest rates on new car loans to 12.8 per cent — nearly 5 points lower than current levels. GM said the lower rates will be available until May 31 for buyers of new cars, light-duty trucks and vans and would save the customer an average $825 (U.S.) over the term of a typical loan.
