Shopping bag baby BANGKOK, Thailand (UPI) - Baby Louise, smuggled out of Thailand in a shopping bag, returned to Bangkok more con- ventionally this week to her third set of parents in less than a year of life. The tug-of-love, which began five months ago when her natural mother gave the baby to a Danish couple because she could not afford to look after her, climaxed when the gurgling infant was turned over to Thai foster parents — an army captain and his bank-clerk wife. “Im so excited and pleased, she’s so cute,” the new mother said of the pink, plump and _ happy-looking baby. : Karin and Erik Mor- tensgaard, the Danish couple who smuggled her out of Thailand last July in a duty-free airport shopping bag, are in jail in Denmark awaiting trial. _ Chalor Thammasri, director-general of Thailand's welfare depart- ment, said Louise, whose official name is Pabsuba Tong, will be sent to live with her new foster parents in a Bangkok suburb. According to the Mor- tgensaards, the girl's widowed mother begged them to take the 7-month- returns to new parents old child, because she could not afford to care for her seven children. Mortgensaard claimed efforts at legal adoption through the maze of Thai laws became tangled in red tape, so Enk, immigration reports show, put the child in a duty-free airport shopping bag and simply boarded a commercial flight to Copenhagen. Mortgensaard told authorities in Denmark she did not pay for the baby, but gave the real mother several thousand baht (more than $100) to look = after the remaining children.
