Shore chemical industry ‘surrounding us’ Dear Editor: I was very much im- pressed, and at the same time relieved, when Mayor Bell announced recently, that the application of a methanol tank near the Vancouver Wharf willonly be considered, after the Municipal Task Force had made their recom- mendations to the District Council about chemical hazard on the North Shore. What a shock and dis- appointment when Mayor Bell followed up this matter shortly after announcing, that this methanol tank application was out of his jurisdiction, which prac~- tically gave green light for the construction to start. As a member of the Crow-haters shoul Dear Editor: How sad that a member of the West Vancouver Police Force has taken upon himself the blood-caked job of “crow controller” for our fair municipality. Apparently two or three anxiety-ridden residents are complaining each week over the early morning ruckus created by the black birds as they scavenge for a hearty breakfast. To counteract this lively threat to a peaceful sleep-in, a certam police officer has volunteered off- duty hours to blow crows out of the sky in selected “problem” areas, ac- companied by two or three other intrepid volunteers who donate their tngger- happy services to this absurd cause. This strategy, which muffles the organic cacophony of indigenous West Coast Ravens with the thunderous roar of shotgun blasts, accounts for about sixty crow deaths per week. This morning I could not help but feel agitated by the obnoxious wheezing and whining of a passing street cleaner, performing — its Enleeii the DF When you need profes sronal advic @ ang quaranteed no shrinkage cleaning of your vatuable Grapentoes call bE heen toe Orapery Oopeciahst at Roy s Fileens thorough khiow ledge Of drapernen and dry 1 beregrvnyg) in oe Teta reason you 4m trust toy s We re not eaqpensive other creat bear qges veolaerver beets as Charge corpoettiety low pore €rta DRAPERY CLEANING ROY’S 648 Queensbury Ave .NV 987-3431 987-3233 superfluous task on our block. (didn’t it rain just yesterday?) I wonder if our good officer would have responded to my imagined complaint by arriving on the scene with a loaded bazooka and taking aim, promptly eliminated the mechanical scourge from our otherwise quiet and serene neighbor- hood. Not bloody likely! Whatever happened to the sanctity of life? Do street cleaners, airplanes, con- struction cquipment and other local manifestations of industrial society have more right to impose _ their automated decibel levels on human ears than the living vital sounds of crow flocks cawing at the sumrise, or anxious youths shouting, dancing, and singing at a boisterous party? A strange, warped set of values we have incorporated into our lifestyle if we give machines licence to rule our auricular lives, and in our inevitable frustration condemn the rich harmony of nature's in- tonations.
