Robert Maki, aged 19, of 308-105 West Keith Road, was charged with failing to obey a probation order to keep the peace and be of good order, after he was convicted in North Van- couver Provincial Court, April 10, of possession of marijuana. Maki was placed on probation, October 30 of last year, after he was found guilty of breaking and cn- tering, and theft, in W.Van court. ‘I didn’t really think very strongly about marijuana,’ Maki, who was also con- victed carlier of possession, said. The whole matter didn't really seem to be as serious as it was,’ he told the court. (Terry Peters photo). Maki said‘ he had had numerous talks with his probation officer about using marijuana, but he said he ‘took the attitude it’s not going to happen to me.’ ‘In incurring a _ further sentence you have com- mitted two offences,’ Judge | Millar said. ‘That I cannot let go by.’ Millar strongly con- demned the use of marijuana, saying, ‘you're on a permenant impairment kick if you take that stuff once a week.’ Referring to the widespread acceptance of Marijuana over the last ten years, Millar § spid,‘a generation of genes is going down the drain.’ ‘Tf you read the latest medical literature you sce marijuana is coming to be known as a very dangerous drug.’ Millar said he would sentence Maki to four days imprisonment for breaching probation, but on Maki's request deferred the sen- tencing until this week. ‘You're sleepwalking,’ Millar told Maki. ‘You're going to have to pull yourself up very very sharp.’ NEWS to help students The News is going to help students with their search for summer employment. ye As space permits in our classified section we will be running ads from students looking for a summer job.
