(Terry Peters photo) Ny There is still no firm ~ guarantee that the provincial government will bail Lions Gate Hospital out of the million-dollar hole which the hospital otherwise faces by March 31. If it doesn’t, staff layoffs are said to. be inevitable. , Directors of the Hospital Society emerged tight-lipped Friday from a 45-minute meeting with Health Minister Bob McClelland at North Vancouver District municipal hall without any definite commitment of help from Victoria. Conferring with Mc- Clelland were Hospital Society chairman Maurice Fellis, vice-chairman Don McAlister, a West Van- couver alderman, District Mayor Don Bell and City Mayor Jack Loucks. Although the minister and the hospital representatives expressed some guarded and conventional optimism following their meeting, they declined to elaborate on details of the talk. Fellis told the News that the hospital would spend $25 million up to the end of the current fiscal year on March 31, covered by only $24 million in the budget. In the previous fiscal year an overrun of $200,000 on a $20 million budget was, in fact, picked up by the government. McClelland said after the meeting that his department had made “adjustments of $300,000” in favor of LGH as a result of prior meetings. He did not, however, clarify whether the “adjustments” Over 600 Pieces were part of, or in addition to, the million dollar deficit now looming. Friday’s meeting was a sequel to an earlier one two weeks ago between the same four hospital representatives and Premier Bill Bennett. On that occasion Mayor Jack Loucks, hospital board finance chairman, pressed for an increase of $8.50 in the Health Ministry's per diem grant to LGH (presently $123) to cover the million-dollar overrun. Mayor Loucks warned at the time of significant staff layoffs—"“the figure of 70 is mentioned,” he said—if the extra per diem payment was not met by Victoria. Asked Friday whether the present per diem rate was too low, McClelland evaded a direct answer. To a _ question about negotiations with other B.C. hospitals facing similar budget problems, the minister would only reply: “It may be a better year than others.” A VERY LARGE OFFICE EQUIPMENT - AUCTION SEE OUR AD TODAY'S BUSINESS PAGE 22 JOINER AUCTIONS CLASSIFIED 986-6222 29tRt de: destroy trees PAGE 7 | PERSIAN RUG SALE Late Arrival Of Shipment # A.B. 6055 Far Vancouver Home Show Firat Public Viewing & Sale at Delta's Airport inn, Richmond | iS a Persian rug on the floor What does that tell you about its owner?
