Preparing the cooling system for winter WHEN THE cold breezes start to biow, it's time to blow the bugs out of your radiator. Your cooling .system is as important in the winter as it is in the summer, so have a look at your radiator and the hoses. Clean out all the grunge caught in your radiator coils. Drain out the old coolant (antifreeze) and remem- ber that it is deadly and must be dis- posed of safely, particularly out of reach of children and pets. By Maureen Curtis Contributing Writer Delay too long. and the result is the same — a big pain, particularly in the pocketbook. According to Moez Manji at Master Tune-up, the purpose of something like a regular oi! change is not merely to enrich the mechan- ic. Many people do not realize that the vil in a vehicle has several func- tions: lubricator, coolant and deter- gent. It should be changed an average of twice a year — or more, depend- ing on how you drive. Stopping and starting and taking short trips of 10 minutes or less do not allow a vehicle to get up to optimum operating temperature and are, therefore. much more wearing. Filters ure needed to catch the rust and grime that oi] picks up in its role as cleanser in the automo- tive system, Frequent short trips will result in the need for more filter changes. When you take your car in for regular tuneups, you're exposing it to the critical eye of someone on the lookout for other maintenance needs. He's more likely to notice the signs and symptoms of wear and malfunction that the driver has got- ten used to over time — such as rregular idling or hesitation. The tuneup specialist will let you know if your brakes are on their last legs. A brake job becomes a lot more expensive when you are down to metal on metal. necessitating the replacement of extra items, such as the rotors.
