We figured we would have our children within close range of cach other, deter- mining that this would give them someone to play with, get us through diapers quick- ly and allow us to all live as one happy, commonly inter- ested family. Ir has given them some- one to play with, and, of course, to have serious sibling rivalries with. We did get through diapers with three children in a mere seven years, having exhausted our entire savings on disposable diapers. And the kids do have pret- ty common interests, leading, ta a lack of hand-me-downs since they all want the same thing at the same time. Lately, we've noticed a few more miscalculations we have made on the road to bliss. As they all teetered on the ado- lescent edge, we noticed some pretty big changes. Baby teeth gave way to adult teeth and betore we knew it, those cute little smiles were a jumble of multi- directional pearls, making what seemed to be very large mouths pale in comparison. The first visit to the ortho- dontist confirmed our great- est fear. As each son opened his mouth, the orthodontist gasped that deep gasp that fells you he has never seen sucha difficult professional challenge before. His slump- ing shoulders and occasional nodding of the head back and forth were a clear indication we would not be taking an exotic vacation or purchasing gourmet ice cream at any point in the near future. A Mere seven years of ortho- Parental Guidance dontics lay ahead of us, in neat monthly payments. I tried to convince the boys that when everyone else’s teeth were straight, they would be unique, something: which is generaily valued in the teen culture. Unfortunately, [ did not move as fast as the orthodon- tist, whose demonstration of multi-coloured wires made every set of “tracks” a novel- ty. J suspect it is only a matter of time before braces come complete with their own built in cell phone and Internet message service. I did score some let’s- think-about-this points when the term extraction was bandied about. In fact, when linked with the concept of multiple needle freezing, I” began to consider the possi- bility of buying a new sofa for the living room, but laughing gas won that fear over and I was left with no alternative but to concur that the process should begin immediately for | the oldest, soon for the mid- dle child and not far away for the youngest. On the way out to the parking lot, I found a penny and picked it up, not for good luck, but because I: might need it!
