On Monday the organiza- tion’s founders asked North Vancouver City counciliors for help vo find one. David and Emiko Foster, Harvest Project founders, asked council to waive the rent of $1,386 per month for the rest of its stay at 166 West Esplanade, so the organiza- tion can save the rent money to pay for the relocation. The organization has outgrown the space and it is slated for eventual redevelopment. City social planner Larry Orr outlined in a letter to David Foster that the city has provided $111,950 in finan- cial support to the organiza- tion since 1995. The Harvest Project designed a model of a two storey building which would double the available space, and would possibly include room for a temporary shelter for homeless people. Coun. Barbara Perrault said she was not aware of the homeless problem in the city, which David Foster estimated to be 40 to 70 people at any time. A task force has been set up with the North Shore medical offi- cer cf health, — Brian O’Connor, to find strategies to deal with the issue of homelessness. Statistics from the Harvest Project show that 70% of clients come from the city, while 30% are residents of the district. Perrault wants to ensure that the district would be a funding partner with the city. The organization also asked that a councillor and a staff member join the reloca- tion taskforce, and that the city wait as long as possible before serving the six-month’s notice to vacate. David Foster . said the taskforce will include Harvest representatives, along with representatives of Sussex Realty and the North Shore News. The organization also plans to raise money by offer- ing seminars and courses, 2 thrift shop and fundraising events. Council turned the request - back to municipal staff to clar- ify some of the financial details and ensure there is no” duplication of services with other organizations. The Harvest Project has’ helped thousands of people in financial need since its incep- tion six years ago. It provides both emergency short term needs, as well as life skills training.
