Soft-spoken engineer shares sto Vik&i Finkbeiner Contributing Writer BILL HALL knows what it’s like to eat moose to survive. Civil engineer on the move, that was Bill. He has tramped around ins rugged terrain, curled on naturalice, mined fer gold, joined the RCE and was on Vancouver Island the night it was shetled by the Japanese. This son of Portage La Prairie, Manitoba decided very young that farming was nor for him, so he found work with the Department of Highways until he com meneed his studies in civil engincering at the University of Alberta. After graduating, — Bill continued to work with the Deparrment of Highways. Remembers Bill: “The project was surveying a loca- tion for a shortcut from High Prairie west to Grand Prairie — not an easy feat in that rough terrain. “One winter we lived ina tent and ate mostly moose meat, we had no_ other choice,” he recalls. That spring they were assigned to survey work in the Portland Canal area. The Depression years found Bill doing civil engi- neering work and gold min- ing In Vancouver, he conun ued gold mining with the Priaatcer Mining Compan at Zebalos, on the west coast of Vancouver Island. Thinking back, Bil says: “LP ospent the winters at the mines doing surveys, keeping records, plans, ct cetera, and the summers doing exploration work and development througout B.C.” That arrangement was agreeable to Bill, who helped build a Red Cross vight-bed hospital on the west coast of Vancouver Istand. It was there that he met his furure wife Eileen, who was on staff at the hos- pital. He remembers vividly: “One evening im 1942 a group of ladies gathered at our home for a meeting, and suddenly all the hydra power was turned off. Estevan Point had been shelled by the Japanese. “Being anxious about their families and frightened, the girls scrarnbled over the rocks in the dark to get back to their homes.
