Safety on the Streets, or SOS, covers environmen- tal, social and personal safety, said project co- ordinator Greg, McDonnell. Initiatives include painting yellow fish on storm drains and conducting parking lot audits to identify drivers who leave valuables out in the open. “Police vol- unteers” then leave a blue “tickler note” reminding drivers to keep valuables out of site. The group also delivers groceries to shut-ins, as well as pro- viding lawn and garden services. Their favorite project? A May 7th Safety March " against violence, which drew 230 participants and featured keynote speaker Merv Duggan of CAVEAT. Rock bands Solomen’s Echo and CoolHandLuke also made appearances. “The Safety March was one of the best things Pve done,” said SOS participant, Kris Yourchik, 20. “It was really amazing to see that many people against vio- lence marching down the street.” Project partners for Safety on the Streets include the North Vancouver Community Policing Centres, ICBC, the North Vancouver Recreation Commission, North Shore House, the District of North Vancouver and the City of North Vancouver.
