It’s affected the number of entries in the 11th annual North Shore Gardens Contest. “The weather has been so discouraging for people,” says contest chair Aimee Murrell..“It’s been a long period in the dol- rums.” Blooms have been beaten down by the rain while slugs and snails have flourished. With just 10 days left betore the contest clos- es July 14, organizers of the annual event are encouraging residents and local businesses to send in their entries. There are separate categories for balcony, patio and vegetable gardens, as well as large and small spaces. Contestants should not be ashamed of their garden’s present condition since judging is based on many factors, says Murrell. “Judges not only see the garden in bloom but look at what the garden is like the year round,” she says. Judges award points for layout and composition, use of site, plant selection, productivity, horticultural practices, and special features like lighting, fencing, use of decorative material and maintenance, All contest participants are invited to an awards night on Wednesday, Sept. 24, at which gardening expert David Tarrant is expected to speak. There will also be a slide show of the win- ning gardens, The annual North Shore Gardens Tour is set for Sunday, July 27, . Contest entry forms are available at municipal hall.
