& — Wednesday, March 19, 1997 — North Shore News | Grace, resolution Dear Editor: It was with some amuse- ment and also some disap- pointment with which I read your article about Lucas Rupert Brown {Cancer treat- ment braved at home, March 7 News). T am writing on behalf of other parents and staff of 3B Children’s Hospital to amend some errors in your script. Firstly the Oncology unit at Children’s Hospital consists of 17 inpatient beds, only one area of which can accommo- date four children. This area is, however, desig- nated for only two beds at this time. The occasion when four beds were used was ‘during a period of redecoration where other rooms had to be closed. ~ Secondly both nts and staff have expressed their ccn- cern at being described as “zombies.” For any nt being told that your child has a life threat- ening illness is a stressful heart- wrenching situation. Most of the people working in or receiving treatment in this area do so with great grace, courage and isi lifting This is only outweighed by their dedication to the children Receive an extra 10% off a drapery ‘sale Sheers from $499 per pleated fi. Valance Labour 30% off Drapery Labour 30% off (our fabrics only) order before March 31/97 ‘Specializing 3n window coverings for over odds involved. Although unforn- Nate to be diagnosed with can- cer Lucas is fortunate to have a relatively simple treatment pro- tocol. Many children could nor have the option of post-hydra- tion ar home, some being in- patients for weeks or months ar a time. All of which is accepted with grace and the resolution to beat insurmountable odds. You have presiously printed articles featuring other patients of the oncology nit. Maybe you should reinterview them or speak to the families who create second homes in Konald McDonald House, Easter Seal House or Canuck Place. Maybe then you will gain a truc impression of these “zom- bies.” Alan Morris alan morris@bc.sympatico.ca Relevance questioned Dear Editor: Your front page story was tragic, (NV fam- ily mourns murdered woman, March 16) and my heart goes out to the family and friends of Kelly Kaler. 1 question the relevance of the comment in the final paragraph “Kaler’s family on her mother’s side have lived in North Vancouver for three generations.” Would reporter Anna Maric D’Angelo have felr the need to establish this fact if the surname was nat Siddoa, but Nobic? Wright? Collins? How about D'Angelo?
